Spray Adhesive Best Practices: A Guide to Proper Application

Posted on August 18, 2026 by Ductmate Industries

Spray adhesives provide a fast and efficient way to bond materials during ductwork fabrication and installation. Proper application and precautions are important for achieving a strong, consistent bond.

Follow these best practices to help improve adhesive performance and produce more reliable results.

Preparing the Materials & Work Areas

Before applying spray adhesive, make sure the surfaces being bonded are clean, dry, and free of dust, dirt, oil, and other contaminants. Adhesive applied over a contaminated surface may stick to the debris instead of the material and weaken the bond.

The temperature of the adhesive, materials, and work area can also affect application. Always check the product’s technical data sheet for acceptable storage and application temperatures.

Before beginning:

✅ Confirm that the adhesive is compatible with both materials
✅ Clean and dry the application surfaces
✅ Protect surrounding areas from overspray
✅ Make sure the workspace has adequate ventilation
✅ Review the product label, technical data sheet, and safety data sheet

Correct Spray Techniques

✅ Hold the spray applicator at a consistent distance and angle from the surface.
❌ Spraying too closely can concentrate adhesive in one area, and spraying from too far away can create excess overspray and inconsistent coverage.

✅ Apply the adhesive with smooth, controlled passes. Keep the applicator moving at a steady speed and slightly overlap each pass to prevent gaps.
❌ Avoid uneven passes and missed areas, especially along edges and corners where material is more likely to lift.

✅ Consistent coverage is more important than simply applying more adhesive.
❌ A heavier application does not necessarily create a stronger bond.

Applying the Correct Amount of Adhesive

One of the most common application mistakes people make is using too much or too little adhesive. The goal is to achieve the coverage specified without oversaturation.

Too little adhesive can cause: incomplete coverage, loose edges, material separation, or premature bond failure.

Too much adhesive can cause: longer drying times, uneven bonding, trapped solvent or moisture, and unnecessary waste.

IMPORTANT: The correct amount of adhesive should cover 90% of the surface area of the duct board/metal. Thickness in mils is not specified, but you should use the minimum amount of adhesive necessary to securely hold the material in place prior to weld pinning.

Bonding Materials & Cure Time

Make sure the materials are properly aligned before they touch. Some adhesives develop an immediate bond, making repositioning difficult. Once aligned, apply firm and even pressure across the entire bonded surface. Pay particular attention to edges, corners, seams, and curved areas. If required, use a manufacturer-recommended roller to promote full contact and remove bubbles or wrinkles.

Initial tack does not always mean the adhesive has reached full strength. The bond may continue to develop after the materials are joined. Moving, bending, fabricating, or installing the bonded materials too soon can interfere with the curing process. Protect the assembly from stress and unsuitable environmental conditions for the full period specified by the manufacturer.

Choosing the Right Spray Adhesive

The correct adhesive depends on the materials being bonded, the fabrication process, and the conditions the finished assembly will experience. Water-based and solvent-based products may have different application requirements, drying characteristics, and safety considerations.

Before choosing an adhesive, consider material compatibility, application temperature, cure time, expected service conditions, coverage, VOC requirements, and applicable codes or specifications. Always confirm that the selected adhesive is approved for the intended application.

Ductmate offers a variety of spray-grade duct liner adhesives:

Gecko Glue Silver & Gold:

  • Sustainable Choice: The water-based formula offers an environmentally friendly alternative to solvent-based adhesives and is LEED-compliant, CDPH-compliant, low in VOCs, and UL-classified.
  • Industry-Leading Performance: Gecko Glue provides one of the fastest drying times among water-based adhesives, along with market-leading wet tack, strong dry tack, and a smooth finish.
  • Versatility for Different Duct Liners: Designed for a variety of duct liners and insulation materials, including PolyArmor, elastomeric, and fiberglass.
  • Cost-Effective Bulk Options: Available in 275-gallon totes that hold the equivalent of five 55-gallon drums, helping save storage space, reduce changeover time, and lower labor costs. The totes are also compatible with existing coil lines and standard drum-spraying equipment.

Gecko Glue Concentrate:

  • Reduced Costs: Gecko Glue Concentrate can be mixed on-site in just 10–15 minutes, helping reduce pre-mixed drum and shipping costs. The concentrate is also ideal for smaller projects or facilities with limited storage space.
  • Extended Product Life: Gecko Glue Concentrate offers an extended shelf life when stored unmixed and maintains a shelf life of 6–18 months after mixing.

Quick-Stick CA:

  • Fast, Strong Bond: The quick-tack, high-build formula provides aggressive initial grab and creates a strong, permanent bond in a single application.
  • Versatile Use: Designed for fiberglass, polyester, and elastomeric duct liners, Quick-Stick CA can also effectively bond foam, metal, and wood.
  • California Compliant: The methylene chloride-free formula complies with California SCAQMD Rule 1168, making it suitable for projects with strict adhesive requirements.
  • Low-Emission Formula: Low in VOCs and formulated without ozone-depleting substances or hazardous air pollutants for a more environmentally responsible option.
  • Convenient Formats: Available in self-contained cylinders for larger applications and portable aerosol cans for smaller projects, repairs, and touch-ups.
