Removable & Breakaway Connections Available for Rectangular Flange Connection Systems

removable and breakway connections for rectangular flange connection systems

Posted on October 31, 2025 by Ductmate Industries

Ductmate offers removable and breakaway connections for rectangular flange connection systems. Learn more below.

Removable Connections

Removable fasteners provide quick, easy access for maintenance, inspections, and repairs. They are also used for temporary assembly during fabrication and for systems that may need reconfiguration.

Our removable connections feature carriage bolts and nuts, or hand-tightened wing nuts.

Breakaway Connections

Breakaway connections are safety devices that allow ductwork to detach from a fire damper sleeve during a fire, which keeps the damper securely in place within the fire-rated opening. The breakaway connection is designed to fail under this force before the entire damper is pulled out of the fire-rated opening.  This maintains the fire barrier’s integrity, preventing the spread of flames, smoke, and heat through the opening.

Our breakaway connections feature nylon bolts and nylon nuts, or hand-tightened wing nuts.

Installation Instructions

IMPORTANT: During fabrication, do not notch duct sections or sleeves when using the Ductmate Rectangular Flange System. Refer to the assembly and installation manual for complete details.

  1. Cut flange to the proper length for each respective profile.
  2. Assemble each frame by inserting corner pieces into the hollow web of the flange.
  3. Slide completed frames onto each duct section and sleeve, making sure that the assembly is thoroughly seated into the integral mastic pocket of the flange.
  4. Apply a small amount of water-based duct sealant to the inside edge of each corner at the corresponding raw edge of the duct or sleeve.
  5. Apply a continuous strip of closed-cell neoprene gasket to the entire face of one of the frames, making sure that the gasket covers the inside edge of each corner and the corresponding raw edge of the duct or sleeve.
  6. Align the opposing frame and duct section to be connected and insert a carriage bolt into all four corners and firmly tighten. For applications requiring toolless access, use wing nuts instead of standard nuts (see fastener requirements below).
  7. Apply 6” metal or PVC cleat according to the following schedule:
  • For ½”-2” WG/SP, use 6” cleat 24” OC
  • For 3-4” WG/SP, use 6” cleat 18” OC
  • For 6-10” WG/SP, use 6” cleat 12” OC

IMPORTANT: For breakaway connections, use only PVC cleat with a minimum of one per side

Gasketing 101: A Guide to Sealing Ductmate Rectangular Flange Connector Systems

Person applying gasket tape to duct system

Posted on October 31, 2025 by Ductmate Industries

Gasketing is an essential measure used to create tight, durable seals between joint surfaces. In HVAC systems, this directly combats the invisible thief: air leakage. Without proper gasketing, improperly sealed ductwork can leak up to 30% of air, resulting in waste and forcing the system to work harder. Over time, this can lead to system failure and costly repairs.

Prioritizing proper gasket application is not only best practice but also crucial for maximizing energy efficiency, extending system lifespan, and meeting building codes and standards.

What Gasket Options Does Ductmate Offer?

DM 440 Butyl Gasket Tape & Patches

DM 440™ Butyl Gasket Tape is the preferred gasket for the Ductmate ‘25’/’35’/’45’® flange connector systems. This tape has the widest range of application temperatures of any material on the market, ensuring a positive seal and ease of application under extreme conditions and is also suitable for use with other rectangular flange systems that require a gasket.  It is LEED-compliant, USDA-acceptable, and meets FDA requirements, and is formulated with an EPA-registered biocide package that prevents the growth of mold, mildew, and fungus.

For the ‘25’ and ‘35’ systems, we suggest using a 5/8” wide 440 gasket, while a 1” wide gasket is recommended for the ‘45’ system. Optional 3” x 2” 440 corner patches are also available to help eliminate inconsistent or recurring gasketing problems at the corners.

Neoprene Gasket Tape

Neoprene Gasket Tape is a synthetic, closed-cell, and rubber-based duct sealing tape ideal for ensuring a firm, reliable, and long-lasting airtight seal in ductwork.

Its pressure-sensitive adhesive backing makes installation quick and easy. The durability of neoprene foam makes it easy to remove from ductwork without leaving a sticky residue or falling apart. This makes disassembling ducts for periodic cleaning or maintenance easier, allowing for quick, straightforward application of new tape to reseal the connection.

For applications using the DM ‘45’ system, a 1” wide neoprene gasket is required, while a 5/8” wide gasket is used for the ‘25’ and ‘35’ systems.

Sticky Tape

Specifically formulated for use in TDC & TDF roll-formed flange systems, our Sticky Tape is a high-quality general-use tape developed for the industry as a sealant, moisture, and dust barrier. It is non-hardening and has excellent adhesion to most dry metal surfaces.

Installing Gasket During Assembly

Rectangular Slide-On Flange Systems Standard Practices

When applying a gasket to slide-on flange connector systems, start by applying it halfway between the duct corners, then center it on the angle.

As you approach the duct corner, position the gasket in an arc to cover the three critical points. Please note that some gasket will protrude into the airstream.

Press the gasket firmly into contact with the raw edge of the duct corner and the Ductmate corner assembly. Apply the gasket completely around the Ductmate frame to the beginning point. Where the gasket meets, overlap it for approximately 3/8”.

On the opposing frame, apply 440 gaskets only to the corners, approximately 3” per corner, and make sure to cover the same three critical points as before. Alternatively, the DM 440 corner patches can help eliminate inconsistent or recurring gasketing problems at the corners during this step.

Carefully align mating frames before they touch, as DM 440 adheres on contact. A drift pin can be used to correct any misalignment.

Removable or Breakaway Connections

Begin by wiping the face of the flanges and corners with a dry cloth where the gasket and sealant will be applied.

Apply a water-based sealant to all eight corners of the connection, ensuring it covers the gaps between the corner and the duct wall. Allow the sealant to fully dry before applying the gasket.

Apply neoprene gasket around the perimeter of one duct section of the connection. Start gasketing halfway between corners, favoring the outside edge of the flange. Apply it in an arc at all four corners, making sure to cover the three critical points.

Finally, as you approach the start, press the end of the gasket tightly against the starting point.

TDC & TDF Roll-Formed Flange Connections

Another popular type of ductwork, in addition to our slide-on flange systems, is the TDC & TDC roll-formed flange. When applying gasket, similar application practices can be used in accordance with slide-on flange systems; the only difference is that we recommend our Sticky Tape, formulated specifically for this system type.

Selecting Gasket for Round & Oval Ductwork: Understanding Open vs. Closed-Cell Foam

Posted on September 25, 2025 by Ductmate Industries

When sealing round or flat oval ductwork, foam gasket tape is often used to create an airtight seal, maintain energy efficiency, and ensure proper airflow; however, not all foams are created equal. Understanding the difference between open-cell and closed-cell foam is crucial for ensuring a proper seal and avoiding costly mistakes when choosing your materials.

What’s the Difference Between Open and Closed-Cell Foam?

The primary difference between open-cell and closed-cell foam lies in their internal structure.

Open-cell foam has interconnected air pockets, making it highly permeable to air and water. While it’s excellent for cushioning or sound absorption, its permeability prevents it from forming an airtight or watertight seal, similar to a sponge. This can lead to air leaks, moisture absorption, and potential mold growth in HVAC systems.

Due to its permeability, open-cell foam is generally not suitable for sealing ductwork. It is more commonly used for projects that require acoustic absorption, padding and cushioning, such as in furniture and bedding, as well as for air sealing where moisture isn’t an issue, like in interior walls and attics.

Closed-cell foam, on the other hand, is composed of individual, sealed cells that resemble tiny balloons packed tightly together. This structure makes the foam highly resistant to air and moisture, making it ideal for insulation and sealing. It is also denser and more durable than open-cell foam, resisting compression set, which is the tendency for it to lose its thickness after being compressed.

While both open and closed-cell foam have their uses, closed-cell foam is the clear choice for ductwork because it creates an effective seal by resisting air and moisture, preventing leaks and condensation.

Why is Neoprene Gasket the Best Option for Round & Oval Ductwork?

Among the closed-cell foam gasket options, neoprene is a superior material made from synthetic rubber, ideal for sealing round and flat oval ductwork. Its unique advantages make it the best choice for ensuring a reliable and long-lasting seal.

  • Excellent Sealing Properties: Closed-cell neoprene provides a firm, airtight seal, which is critical for preventing air leaks in round and flat oval ductwork. Its ability to conform to irregular surfaces while maintaining integrity ensures a reliable seal.
  • Durability and Resilience: Neoprene is highly resilient and resistant to compression set. This means it can withstand the constant pressure and vibration common in HVAC systems without losing its shape or sealing effectiveness over time.
  • Flexibility: While durable, neoprene remains flexible, which is essential for creating a tight seal around the curved surfaces of round ductwork. This flexibility allows it to compress evenly around the flanges.
  • Clean & Simple Removal: The resilient nature of neoprene foam makes it easy to remove from ductwork without leaving behind a sticky residue or falling apart. This simplifies the process of disassembling ductwork for periodic cleaning or maintenance, allowing for a quick and easy application of new gasket tape to reseal the connection.

Spiralmate & Ventmate Round Duct Connector Systems Create a Winning Solution for UBS Arena

Posted on September 16, 2025 by Ductmate Industries

For years, the New York Islanders hockey team played at the Barclays Center, an arena primarily built for basketball. This arrangement led to obstructed views for fans who often had to watch the game from the scoreboard, and poor ice conditions and unfavorable gameplay for players were caused by the old piping system. The team finally caught a break in 2017 when they were awarded a new 17,000-person arena: the UBS Arena at Belmont Park.

When it came time to select a sheet metal subcontractor for the UBS Arena, many companies competed for the job. Ultimately, Triple S Air Systems, a Long Island-native company, won the bid. The project presented a significant challenge: installing a large amount of spiral ductwork in the arena’s “bowl,” with some pieces reaching massive sizes of 96″, 86″, and 76″. To add to the difficulty, the ducts had two inches of internal insulation.

Fortunately, Triple S was no stranger to large-scale ductwork. In 2016, they successfully installed 76″ spiral ductwork during the enclosure of the Arthur Ashe Stadium, the project during which they first used Ductmate’s Spiralmate system. They were impressed with the product’s one-bolt closure and self-sealing flanges, which made installation quick and easy.

Normally, large-diameter spiral pipes require expensive companion angle rings for reinforcement. However, during the bidding phase, Ductmate proposed an innovative solution: using Spiralmate alongside a similar product called Ventmate. Traditionally used in mining and tunnel applications, Ventmate features a wider closure band with an integrated neoprene gasket. This design allows for a secure seal even when duct runs are slightly misaligned. For the UBS Arena project, this wider band made installing the larger ducts significantly easier and eliminated the need for a separate gasket on the mating face of the flanges.

Triple S Project Manager Greg Cross had nothing but praise for Spiralmate and Ventmate. These systems enabled a significantly smoother assembly process compared to traditional angle rings. The team was able to pre-build sections of ductwork in their shop, installing the outer and inner rings before bringing them to the job site. This process, combined with the one-bolt closure band, allowed workers to avoid climbing on top of the ductwork to secure connections, resulting in significant labor savings and a safer installation environment.

Construction on the arena was underway when the COVID-19 pandemic hit, halting all non-essential projects in New York City. Despite the jobsite closure, Triple S continued to manufacture the necessary ductwork. Cross commended Ductmate for its ability to meet lead times and maintain a steady supply of materials, while many other suppliers faced significant supply chain disruptions.

In the end, the project utilized 643 Spiralmate and Ventmate three-piece systems and 752 2″ inner rings.

Cross’ final recommendation speaks for itself, “I would 100% recommend Ventmate and Spiralmate for future projects where a large-diameter duct is going to be utilized.”

PolyArmor vs. Traditional Fiberglass & Elastomeric Duct Liner Insulations

Posted on April 16, 2025 by Ductmate Industries

While fiberglass and elastomeric duct liner insulation have traditionally dominated the market, Ductmate’s PolyArmor polyester insulation has emerged as a superior alternative, offering a compelling blend of performance, installation, and environmental benefits.

Fiberglass: The Traditional Choice with Limitations

Fiberglass insulation is known for its affordability and thermal resistance. However, it presents several drawbacks:

  • Fiber Shedding: Fiberglass easily breaks down and releases microscopic fibers into the airstream, posing potential health risks and requiring careful handling and installation.   In time, this can lead to costly repairs and replacement of the insulation.
  • Moisture Absorption: While fiberglass itself does not provide food for mold, when it does collect moisture, dust, dirt, and other organic debris trapped inside can act as a breeding ground for mold.
  • Installation Challenges & Environmental Concerns: Installing fiberglass can be challenging, requiring specialized tools and protective gear.   During installation or if the insulation is disturbed, some individuals may experience temporary irritation of the skin, eyes, nose, and throat from both the fiberglass fibers and the formaldehyde released.
  • Reduced Effectiveness: If fiberglass insulation is compressed, its thickness will go down, leading to a reduced overall R-value/thermal resistance.

Elastomeric: Flexibility and Moisture Resistance at a Cost

Elastomeric insulation, often favored for its flexibility and closed-cell structure, offers excellent moisture resistance and condensation control. However, it also comes with its own set of drawbacks and considerations:

  • Higher Cost: Not only is elastomeric material more expensive compared to other insulation types, but it also can be up to four times more expensive to install.
  • Installation Complexity: Proper elastomeric installation requires specialized adhesives and techniques that significantly increase installation and labor costs.
  • Can Break Down: Over time, elastomeric, especially when exposed to exterior conditions, can break down due to factors like UV light and mechanical damage.  This can lead to costly repairs and replacement of the insulation.

PolyArmor: A Strong, Safe, and Superior Alternative

Ductmate’s PolyArmor polyester insulation is engineered to address the shortcomings of traditional insulation materials, offering a superior alternative with several compelling advantages:

  • Fiber-Free and Safe: PolyArmor eliminates fiber shedding and does not break down in the airstream, creating a cleaner and healthier indoor environment.   Its polyester material is soft and hypoallergenic, eliminating irritation during handling that you would typically experience with fiberglass insulation.
  • Superior Moisture Resistance: PolyArmor’s polyester construction provides exceptional resistance to moisture and condensation, minimizing the risk of mold growth.
  • Easy Installation: Designed for ease of installation, PolyArmor reduces labor costs and installation time, with its flexible nature allowing it to conform to any duct shape.
  • Enhanced Thermal Performance: PolyArmor provides industry-leading R-values/thermal resistance, contributing to increased energy efficiency and reduced system load.
  • Durability and Longevity: PolyArmor is engineered from strong and safe polyester that is webbed into a thermal blanket, which is then bonded with an extremely durable FSK-facing that reduces damage during fabrication, operation, and cleaning.
  • Environmental Benefits: Made with environmental sustainability in mind, PolyArmor is manufactured from 25% recycled content.

Variety of Ductmate Products Now GREENGUARD Gold Certified

GREENGUARD Gold Certification products

Posted on February 17, 2025 by Ductmate Industries

Proven to comply with the world’s strictest and most comprehensive standards for low-volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in indoor air quality, a variety of Ductmate water-based adhesives, encapsulating edge coatings, and water-based sealants are now GREENGUARD Gold Certified!

What is a GREENGUARD Certification?

Ever wonder what the GREENGUARD logo means on a product? It’s more than just a sticker – it’s a symbol of cleaner, healthier indoor air. The GREENGUARD Certification process is rigorous, putting products through intense scientific testing to ensure they meet strict chemical emissions standards. Think of it as a quality check for the air you breathe.

UL GREENGUARD Certification gives manufacturers and retailers a powerful way to show they care about your health and the environment. It’s proof that their products release fewer harmful chemicals into your indoor spaces. In today’s market, where consumers are increasingly health-conscious, this certification offers a real edge, demonstrating a commitment to both people and the planet.

But there’s an even higher standard: GREENGUARD Gold Certification. Formerly known as GREENGUARD Children & Schools and GREENGUARD Select, this certification takes things a step further. It’s designed with extra safety factors to protect our most vulnerable populations, such as children and older people. When you see the GREENGUARD Gold logo, you know the product is suitable for even the most sensitive environments like schools, hospitals, healthcare facilities, and daycares. It’s truly the gold standard for indoor air quality.

Not only does GREENGUARD Gold limit emissions of over 360 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and total chemical emissions, but it also meets the stringent requirements of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) Standard Method (also known as California Section 01350). This means these products have passed some of the toughest air quality tests in the country.

Which Ductmate Products are GREENGUARD Gold Certified?

Ductmate’s GREENGUARD Gold Certified products include a variety of our water-based adhesives (Gecko Glue Concentrate, Gecko Glue Gold, Gecko Glue Silver), our water-based sealants (PROseal, FIBERseal, EZseal, EVERseal, and PROseal Spray), and our Super Liner Seal (SLS) and LAG-IT encapsulating edge coatings.

Why is Indoor Air Quality Important?

People spend a staggering 90% of their time indoors. But what if the air we’re breathing inside is actually more polluted than the air outside? Shockingly, indoor air quality (IAQ) can be up to five times worse than outdoor air, posing a significant threat to our health and well-being.

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) ranks indoor air pollution among the top five environmental risks to public health. This isn’t just a minor concern; the World Health Organization estimates that a staggering 3.8 million people die prematurely each year from illnesses directly attributable to indoor air pollution.

The effects can be both immediate and long-term. In the short term, poor IAQ can manifest as headaches and irritation of the nose, eyes, and throat.  Furthermore, flare-ups of conditions like pneumonia and bronchitis can be triggered by indoor air pollutants.

The long-term effects are even more concerning. Prolonged exposure to poor IAQ can increase the risk of cardiovascular disease. Certain indoor pollutants are known carcinogens, contributing to the risk of lung cancer. Additionally, indoor air pollution can worsen existing respiratory issues like asthma, making breathing even more difficult.

What Made Ductmate Products a Good Fit for GREENGUARD Certification?

The products mentioned above were the perfect fit for the GREENGUARD Gold Certification because they meet strict chemical emissions standards.

Problems Solved with DM ‘45’ for Industrial

Posted on August 21, 2024 by Ductmate Industries

When heavy-duty ductwork requires heavy-duty connections, the Ductmate ‘45’ connector system provides a better solution. Let DM ‘45’ solve your problems.

Heavy-duty Ductwork Connections Made Easy with the DM ‘45’ System

With the Ductmate ’45’ connector system, you can say goodbye to the days of struggling with traditional, labor-intensive methods for connecting heavy-duty industrial ductwork. This superior solution not only saves you time, money, and effort but also ensures exceptional performance, making your operations more efficient and cost-effective.

DM ’45’ is a revolutionary self-sealing rectangular duct connection system. Designed specifically for industrial applications where rigid, leak-free connections are critical, DM ’45’ is ideal for data centers, semiconductor plants, battery plants, wastewater treatment plants, chemical plants, oil rigs, stadiums and arenas, underground rail stations and subways, and much more!

The DM ’45’ System: Engineered for Seamless Duct Assembly

The DM ‘45’ system consists of the following precision-engineered components, offering a seamless assembly process:

  • Roll-formed Flanges with Integral Mastic: These flanges ensure a tight seal against the duct wall for a superior, leak-proof connection. The integrated mastic eliminates the need for separate sealant applications, saving time and labor during assembly.
  • Corner Pieces: These components reinforce the ductwork structure, holding everything together securely. Additionally, they provide a dedicated sealing surface for the gasket, further optimizing the system’s airtightness.
  • Gasket: This essential element forms a vital barrier between the flanges, preventing air leaks and ensuring optimal airflow within the duct system.
  • Cleats for Secure and Efficient Assembly:
    • Ductmate Versa-Cleat: This versatile cleat design guarantees consistent compression of the gasket along the entire length of the flange. This ensures a uniform and reliable seal throughout the ductwork.
    • Ductmate Bolt-On Cleat: This cleat option is specifically designed for larger duct spans and areas that are difficult to access. It provides a secure fastening solution even in challenging installation scenarios.

Why Choose DM ‘45’?

When it comes to performance, the DM ‘45’ system doesn’t disappoint.

The DM ’45’ system goes beyond just leak-free connections. Here’s what sets it apart:

  • Unmatched Simplicity: Experience a faster, easier installation process compared to traditional methods. Forget about cutting, welding, painting, and drilling heavy black iron angles. DM ’45’ is a self-sealing, slide-on system that requires minimal assembly effort, relieving you from the burden of complex installation processes.  Watch the installation video below to see just how easy it is.

  • Cost Savings: DM ‘45’s streamlined installation process translates to significant cost reductions, providing you with financial security and confidence in your investment. Welding expenses are eliminated, and overall labor costs are saved.
  • Uncompromising Strength: Don’t be fooled by the ease of use. DM ’45’ is exceedingly strong, tested and proven to match the performance of a SMACNA Class K transverse joint, even without the use of external sealants. This ensures reliable connections for even the most demanding ductwork applications, giving you a sense of security, peace of mind, and confidence in its performance.
  • Versatility for Any Project: DM ’45’ is suitable for a wide range of duct gauges (10 – 18 ga) and is available in various materials, including galvanized steel, aluminum, 316 stainless steel, and black iron. This lets you choose the perfect fit for your specific needs.
  • Aesthetically Pleasing: Unlike bulky companion angles, DM ’45’ offers a clean and professional look. It enhances the overall aesthetics of your ductwork system and can be specified and used as an architectural feature.
  • Guaranteed Performance: Ductmate stands behind the DM ’45’ system with rigorous testing and an industry-leading guarantee.  Enjoy free engineering assistance and duct construction information to reduce installation costs further.

Additionally, the DM ‘45’ boasts the following characteristics:

  • 4-bolt corner and cleat combination are the safest, most efficient means of connecting large ducts on-site
  • Sealing materials meet NFPA 90A & B Class 1 requirements
  • Virtually no leakage at up to 10″ w.g. positive or negative pressure
  • Optional cut-to-length flange reduces fabrication time and scrap (additional cost, minimum quantities and size restrictions may apply)

Equal in strength to a SMACNA K Class 2-1/2” x 2-1/2” x 3/16” angle, the DM ‘45’ system has the strength you need to connect the biggest duct imaginable without the labor-intensive fabrication processes of drilling bolt holes, welding frames, or applying rust-proof coatings.

It’s no wonder why the DM ‘45’ has become the clear choice over the labor-intensive companion angle.
